Roles of Variables Event

27.4.2005

Roles of variables form a new concept that captures programming experts' tacit knoweldge. It can be made explicit and utilized in teaching programming to novices. Roles improve students' mental representations of programs and help them to acquire experts' programming skills. Furthermore, roles can be used to characterize variables for maintenance programmers trying to comprehend existing code. Thus the applicability of roles is not limited to novice programmers but they can be utilized by experts, also.

Attendance

The Roles of Variables Event brings together people interested in understanding cognitive issues of programming and in applying this understanding in teaching programming and in programming tool design. In particular, students interested in these issues are welcome to the event! Attending the event is free and open for everyone!

Program

The event will start at 12:15 in room B330 ("Neuvotteluhuone"). The program consists of the following presentations:

All presentations have been accepted or submitted to international conferences including the 13th IEEE International Workshop on Program Comprehension (IWPC 2005), the 2005 Informing Science and Information Technology Education Joint Conference (InSITE 2005), and the 17th Annual Psychology of Programming Interest Group Workshop (PPIG'05).
